2020 Annual Review

As we move further away from the year of 2020, we’ve had the opportunity to reflect on it with greater clarity and context. The toll on our city and our country was tragic and will be felt for generations. Never before have we simultaneously faced a global public health crisis, an economic and employment disaster, and a community impacted deeply by long-standing issues of unequal justice and racism.

Philadelphia COVID-19 Small Business Relief Fund: Initial Findings

June 2020 – As the COVID-19 pandemic began to spread rapidly through the United States in early March 2020, cities and states began restricting business activity and enacting social distancing measures in an effort to stop the spread of the virus. As the public health and economic crisis escalated, the City of Philadelphia and PIDC quickly mobilized to establish the Philadelphia COVID-19 Small Business Relief Fund, which was one of the first local relief funds in the nation. The Fund ultimately offered $13.3 million in grants and zero-interest loans to over 2,000 Philadelphia small businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

2018 – AN INNOVATIVE PARTNERSHIP: Philadelphia, 1958. Richardson Dilworth was mayor and Dwight D. Eisenhower was in the White House. The Phillies played at Connie Mack Stadium at 20th and Lehigh and the Eagles had just moved to Franklin Field at the University of Pennsylvania. Nearly everybody read The Bulletin.
