Client Expansions & Milestones

Amazing Kidz Academy Celebrated 10 Years in Business

Amazing Kidz Academy was founded in 2014 by Lisa Smith and Clarence Morris III with a simple goal — serve at-risk youth to improve their academic success when entering elementary school. In July of 2023 PIDC provided the preschool with a loan to refinance a COVID-19 Working Capital Access (CWCA) Program loan administered by the Pennsylvania Industrial Development Authority (PIDA), allowing them to grow their revenue and improve performance. They celebrated 10 years in business on March 14, 2024!

Wag Days Opened Second Location in Fishtown

Wag Days is a dog daycare and boarding company owned by animal lover and exercise enthusiast Nora Rodgers. What started as a small walking and boarding service in 2019 has rapidly expanded into a full-service daycare, boarding, and training company. Their first brick-and-mortar location opened in South Philly’s Bok Building in 2020. In September of 2024, they opened their second location in Fishtown with PIDC’s support. The fishtown location is over 6,000 square feet and features two climate-controlled indoor play yards, a large outdoor space for dogs to enjoy the fresh air, and an air filtration and UV purification system to keep pup healthy.

Delaware Valley Community Health Launched New Family Medicine Residency Program

Delaware Valley Community Health (DVCH) implemented a Family Medicine Residency Program, making them the first Teaching Health Center in Philadelphia. In order to launch this residency program, DVCH needed financing to renovate and expand its Fairmount Primary Care Center, located at 1412 Fairmount Avenue. PIDC was proud to support the center, helping them expand their affordable, accessible, primary medical, dental, and behavioral health care and preventive services to patients throughout Philadelphia.

Monarch Yoga Opened Second Location in Northern Liberties

Michelle Dillon founded Monarch Yoga in 2020 with a goal of bringing outdoor movement, breath and connection while many indoor studios were unable to open or heavily restricted due to COVID-19. They earned loyal clients and rave reviews for their signature blend of mindfulness, movement, and community connection. They celebrated a major milestone by opening a second location in the vibrant Northern Liberties neighborhood in September of 2024. The 3,000 square foot studio brings a welcoming atmosphere and diverse range of classes to even more Philadelphians.

LUHV Foods Expanded Their Footprint at Reading Terminal Market

LUHV Food expanded its vegan deli inside Reading Terminal Market in June of 2024. This brand-new location is three times the size of its former space, and boasts fresh, frozen, and microwavable prepared meals, plus an array of ready-to-eat vegan menu items and deli products. Founder and CEO Silvia Lucci is committed to making healthy and nutritious food that tastes delicious mainstream, and this expansion helps get her closer to that goal.

Grant Blvd Owner Dr. Kimberly McGlonn Name One of Philly’s Most Influential People

Dr. Kimberly McGlonn, founder and CEO of the sustainable fashion brand Grant Blvd was recognized in Philadelphia Magazine’s 150 Most Influential People.  McGlonn’s work merges advocacy, sustainability, and style, driving conversations around equity and environmental consciousness. She’s tackling social change as the executive director of Fitler Club’s Fitler Foundation, solidifying her as a social justice and sustainability trailblazer.

Mural City Cellars Expanded the First City Winery in Philadelphia

Mural City Cellars is Philadelphia’s first independently owned urban winery. Founded in 2019 in East Kensington by certified sommelier Nicholas Ducos and his partner, Francesca Galarus, the winery has become a fan-favorite in the city. They opened a permanent home in Fishtown in March of 2024 with the support of PIDC. The new spot acts as a manufacturing/production space, retail space, and 40-seat wine bar offering wine by the glass and local beer.

Milk Jawn Opened Second Location in Northern Liberties

Milk Jawn is a Philly-based small-batch, premium ice cream producer founded by Amy Wilson. She launched the business in 2019 with pop-ups in local farmers markets, and quickly became a sought-after treat. They opened a storefront in East Passyunk in 2022, serving over 20 unique ice-cream flavors, including several vegan options. In July of 2024, they opened their second scoop shop in Northern Liberties. PIDC provided funding for Milk Jawn to make leasehold improvement and equipment purchases for the new location. 

ACANA Began Development of the Africa Center

ACANA, the African Cultural Alliance of North America, is at the forefront of development in Southwest Philadelphia’s Africatown,  a thriving commercial and cultural corridor for the city’s booming immigrant populations from Liberia, Senegal, and other African and Caribbean countries. The nonprofit recently started construction of the Africa Center, a social services and retail hub, and location of ACANA’s new headquarters at 55th Street and Chester Avenue. PIDC was proud to play an instrumental role in helping to structure an array of financing to make the project a reality.

Defined Hospitality Opened Picnic Restaurant & Wine Bar

Award-winning hospitality group Defined Hospitality and chef and Philly native Joe Beddia opened Picnic, a restaurant, wine bar and wine shop in East Kensington, in July of 2024. This adaptive reuse project, supported by PIDC, created approximately 60 new full-time jobs to support the opening of the new 225-seat restaurant and bar.

Northeast Fence & Iron Works Opened a New Powder Coating Facility

Northeast Fence and Iron Work is a family owned, full-service fence designer, fence fabrication company, welder, powder coater, and fence installer, serving commercial customers, residential homeowners, and fence installation companies. This year, they opened a new 16,640 square foot steel building to expand their powder coating capabilities, allowing them to take on much larger projects.

Wm. Mulherin’s Sons opened sister restaurant Mulherin’s Pizzeria

The sister restaurant of Fishtown’s Wm. Mulherin’s Sons, Mulherin’s Pizzeria came to the East Market neighborhood in April of 2024 with PIDC’s support. The spot boasts creative wood-fired pies, mouthwatering pastas, Italian wines, and cocktails. They offer lunch, brunch, dinner and happy hour, so stop by whenever you’re craving Italian eats and a comfy, contemporary atmosphere.

AM Electric Moved into a New Office

In 2024, AM Electric marked a significant step forward with a move into its brand-new office space with the help of PIDC. The 4,025 square foot, two-story space includes an office, garage, and inventory storage. AM Electric was founded in 2002 by Anthony Muhammad, who serves as the president, secretary, and treasurer of the company. This relocation reflects the company’s impressive growth and commitment to providing top-quality electrical services to clients across Philadelphia and beyond.

YouthBuild Philadelphia Opened its New Home

YouthBuild Philadelphia provides a second chance at education for 17-20 year-olds who have previously left the education system. With $8.5 in NMTC allocation from PIDC, YouthBuild renovated a former PECO office building on North Broad and opened its new location this year!

Big Things Happened at the Navy Yard This Year

Revolutionary Health Research

The Navy Yard continued to be an innovation hub for life-science businesses that are developing life-saving therapies for cancer. In February, Iovance Biotherapeutics, Inc. received accelerated approval from the FDA for its infusion treatment AMTAGVI™ (lifileucel) for advanced melanoma. In August, Adaptimmune received FDA approval for its ground-breaking new cancer therapy, Tecelra, the first to target solid cancer tumors.

The Navy Yard named a “Great Place in Pennsylvania”

The Navy Yard added to its collection of awards with a recognition as a “Great Place in Pennsylvania” by the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA-PA). The Navy Yard was honored in the “Great Transformations” category for its successful planning efforts that build healthy and vibrant communities throughout the Commonwealth and promote the Chapter’s mission and vision.

Alchemy X Opened a New Location at the Navy Yard

Alchemy X officially joined the Navy Yard community inside Vincera Institute, located at 1200 Constitution Ave. The new facility provides a full fitness experience to help you reach your wellness goals, featuring diverse classes like Pilates, Barre, Yoga, Resistance, Sculpt, Intensives, and Functional Weight Training. You can also unwind with massages and Reiki services. Plus, their coffee and juice bar is open to the public!

Jason Kelce Filmed a Commercial at the Courtyard Philadelphia South at The Navy Yard

Eagles legend Jason Kelce stopped by the Navy Yard to shoot a commercial  for Courtyard Hotels and Marriott Bonvoy. He kicked off the football season by announcing his new role as a “Fanbassador” for the hotel chain, and showed off his spirit inside the Courtyard Philadelphia South at The Navy Yard. He made himself at home at the hotel, setting up shop inside the lobby and grilling outside the hotel.

Axalta Opened Global Headquarters at the Navy Yard

Axalta, a leading global coatings company, opened its global headquarters at the Navy Yard in November of 2024. Axalta has been operating in the Navy Yard for some time, having opened its Global Innovation Center, the largest coatings research and development (R&D) center in the world, six years ago. This relocation to the Navy Yard marks Axalta’s commitment to unifying operations and collaboration, and strengthens Philadelphia’s reputation as a premier global hub for business.
