It’s no secret that there are lifelong benefits to early childhood education. Children who attend preschool are not only more likely to succeed in kindergarten, they’re successful throughout their entire school experience and beyond. Lisa Smith and Clarence Morris III, co-founders of Amazing Kidz Academy, know how important preschool education is to early childhood development and want to make sure high-quality pre-k is accessible to every child.

Amazing Kidz Academy was founded in 2014 with a simple goal — serve at-risk youth to improve their academic success when entering elementary school. Smith and Morris know that education is the key to a bright future, and that includes high-quality educational programs for preschool-aged children. They’ve been able to accomplish that goal, celebrating 10 years in business on March 14, 2024!

An estimated 90 percent of childcare facilities are owned by women. Yet systemic issues mean they often struggle to obtain capital, which is critical to supporting and growing their businesses. PIDC helps fill these funding gaps, with resources to serve the unique needs of a variety of businesses, including those that are women-owned. In July of 2023, PIDC provided Amazing Kidz Academy with a Working Capital and Equipment Loan to refinance a COVID-19 Working Capital Access (CWCA) Program loan administered by the Pennsylvania Industrial Development Authority (PIDA). This has allowed them to grow their revenue and improve performance.

“Seek the advice of experts and leverage your talents to always present a high-quality product or service. Never take no for an answer, and be disciplined and diligent in your entrepreneurial pursuits. It will eventually bear fruit.”

But funding is only one of the challenges women in business face, and Smith understands that. When asked what advice she would offer aspiring female entrepreneurs, she said, “Seek the advice of experts and leverage your talents to always present a high-quality product or service. Never take no for an answer, and be disciplined and diligent in your entrepreneurial pursuits. It will eventually bear fruit.”

In a fiercely competitive industry, constant improvement has been key. ”With lots of competition within the childcare space, it’s been critical for Amazing Kidz Academy to continually innovate,” said Smith. “[We] adapt to changes in our industry by continuous quality improvement initiatives, staff training and development, using cutting edge state of the art technology in business and academic operations, and keep[ing] children and families first (staff too!) in our daily, monthly, and yearly planning.” The co-founders are intentional about setting the culture of the organization. “Our company’s culture has changed post-COVID. Now, in an era where employees are less engaged, we make it a priority to set workplace beliefs, values, attitudes, standards, purposes, and behaviors,” said Morris. “Engaging with our staff, whether it be at work or an outside function, [not only] shows we care, but also [shows] that they are not just a number. This create[s] cohesion between the staff [and a] boost in morale and teamwork.”

What started as a single preschool has grown to four locations and six buildings throughout the Greater Philadelphia Region, with over 50 staff members and a capacity for over 450 children. Amazing Kidz Academy has acquired contracts from the City of Philadelphia, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and Early Head Start (EHS) through the Health Federation of Philadelphia. They’ve garnered the support and respect of their community by participating in activities like family sponsorships and coat drives and have been recognized by PA First PreK, First Up, and others for the acquisition of their flagship center, a three acre space with a school building, church, and full gymnasium.

Smith and Morris continue doing the hard work to keep Amazing Kidz Academy growing strong and have big plans ahead, including the construction of a state of art infant and toddler center. PIDC will continue to cheer them on and champion small business owners across Philadelphia.
