Hundreds of stakeholders, community leaders, and residents attended last month’s ribbon cutting for Trolley Portal Gardens. Featured speakers included Mayor Jim Kenney, PIDC Board Member and Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell, Trolley Car Station Owner, Ken Weinstein, and PIDC President John Grady.

Through a unique public-private partnership with SEPTA, the City of Philadelphia, and neighborhood stakeholders, UCD raised $2.1 million to transform the 40th Street Trolley Portal. PIDC also helped in financing the project. What was once a desert-like, grey, concrete section of land, UCD transformed into a vibrant and social space for thousands of neighbors, commuters and local employees. The 40,000-square-foot space now features beautiful landscaping, movable and colorful public seating, a collection of planters, and a new restaurant.

Trolley Portal Gardens transforms the West Philly Junction and creates a common ground for Penn and neighboring communities. The overall aesthetic improvements enhances the commutes of nearly 60,000 riders who pass through the Portal each day.
