In 2019, Felipa Ventura transformed personal challenges into inspiration by opening Taqueria Morales, an all-in-one eatery in Philadelphia serving tacos, chicken, drinks, and more. What began as a way to make ends meet has grown into a beloved, family-owned establishment embraced by the local community.

Located in the heart of the city, Taqueria Morales represents resilience, family values, and entrepreneurial spirit. At the center of it all is Ventura, whose vision was born from both necessity and hope.

For Ventura, the journey into entrepreneurship began with a challenge many families face: limited income and big dreams. “We were motivated by two main reasons,” says Ventura. “First, our combined salaries weren’t enough to meet our family’s financial needs, so we decided to leverage our experience by starting our own business. Second, we wanted to provide our children with a brighter future and the opportunity to attend college.”

Like many parents, Ventura was driven by the desire to build a stable foundation and create better opportunities for her children through hard work and determination.

Since opening in 2019, the food scene has continued to evolve and Ventura has made it a top priority to stay relevant in this fast-moving industry. She has embraced modern payment methods and remains proactive by attending local resource fairs and events to better understand her customers. “These interactions help us better understand what people want,” Ventura says. “We use that insight to make thoughtful adjustments and improve our service.”

A key resource that continues to support Ventura’s growth is PIDC’s Business Builder en Español initiative. In partnership with Greenline Access Capital, PIDC provides workshops and webinars designed specifically for Spanish-speaking entrepreneurs and business owners. These sessions offer practical guidance, address common business challenges, and create opportunities to connect with other aspiring entrepreneurs from similar backgrounds.

“Being a part of the BBW series has helped us stay focused on our goals,” said Ventura. “Hearing the inspiring success stories of other entrepreneurs, many of whom have overcome challenges to grow their businesses, made us feel supported. We’ve learned so much, which has allowed us to make valuable improvements to our location and implement changes based on the knowledge we gained during the sessions.”

With the many accomplishments Ventura has earned, a few stand out. A particularly proud moment was being invited by the Philadelphia Department of Commerce to provide catering for the Philadelphia Eagles, a testament to the reputation she and her team have built.

Additionally, the business was recognized as the “Best Restaurant of Philly” in 2020 and ranked among the top 10 taquerias in the city. These recognitions not only reflect Taqueria Morales’  culinary excellence but also the dedication poured into every detail.

Beyond awards, Ventura finds joy in creating memorable experiences for her community. From participating in Philadelphia’s Christmas Village to winning the Philadelphia Thrive Food Competition, each milestone has been a meaningful reminder of how far the business has come.
