The beginning of every year is a perfect time to reflect on the past and set a clear course for the future of your business. Whether you’re looking to scale up, refine your operations, or explore new markets or growth opportunities, goal setting is a foundation for success.

Setting goals isn’t just creating a list of what you want to achieve—it’s crafting a plan to get you where you want your business to go. At PIDC, we’re dedicated to helping Philadelphia’s businesses succeed, so we’ve put together a comprehensive guide to setting impactful goals.

Here’s what you can do to help your business soar in 2025 and beyond:

1. Reflect On The Year

Before you can begin setting goals for the new year, you need to look back on the previous year. Reflecting on the past gives you the opportunity to celebrate successes, acknowledge challenges and lessons learned, and recognize opportunities for growth.

Looking back on your business’s performance also puts you in the right space to set goals for the new year. Think about the goals you set last year. Did you achieve them? If not, why? If you did achieve them, how? Consult your staff to help answer these questions in a measurable way, and use the takeaways as you plan your goals for the new year.

2. Prioritize Key Areas Of Focus

The goals you choose to tackle depends on your business vision and what will drive the most impact. The things you choose to focus on can be a mix of priorities, and it’s completely up to you to decide what matters most to you and your business. Some items you can consider giving special attention to include:

Increase Revenue: Implement tactics to improve sales  and encourage customer retention.
Upgrade Technology: Identify technology inefficiencies and find and implement new solutions.
Career enrichment: Dedicate time and resources to helping your employees grow professionally.
Resource allocation: Review your staffing at all levels and determine if the size of your workforce adequately meets your needs.
Community engagement: Strengthen relationships with your community and create programs that give back.

3. Set SMART Goals|

Follow the “SMART Goals” framework to ensure your goals are clear and attainable.  SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound. Creating SMART goals provides a step-by-step way to achieve your goals and allows you to see your progress throughout the year.

If you’re not sure how to create SMART goals, follow this example:

Instead of saying “Grow my social media accounts”, make the goal SMART by saying “Grow my Instagram account by 25 percent in 12 months by posting relevant and high-quality content once a day, engaging with current followers, and running a paid advertising campaign.”

4. Get Your Team On Board

If you have employees, involve them in the goal-setting process. You won’t be able to meet your business goals if your team is not aligned, so make sure everyone is aware of their role in achieving your business objectives. Be transparent about the new year’s goals to ensure everyone understands their responsibilities and feels motivated to contribute to the business’s success.

5. Monitor & Adjust As Needed

Monitor your progress to ensure you’re on the right path toward achieving your goals. Use key metrics, feedback, and milestones to measure success on a monthly or quarterly basis. And remember, a year is a long time. You should be prepared to adapt your business goals to if things change. You don’t want to miss out on opportunities or avoid challenges just to keep your original goals.

6. Celebrate Wins

Accomplishing a goal is a big deal, so treat it as such! Whether large or small, make sure to recognize the achievement and share with your employees and stakeholders. This not only boosts morale but helps build momentum and motivation for your team to tackle the next goal.

You can acknowledge business achievements by simply offering kudos to an employee, sharing a company-wide announcement, or hosting a happy hour to celebrate. And make sure to remember the employees who helped you achieve your business objectives when promotion season comes around. If appropriate, remember to tout these business wins on your website, social media, or by pitching “the story” to your local media.

The new year is a fresh start, full of possibilities for your business. By setting thoughtful, strategic goals and taking consistent steps to achieve them, you’ll set yourself up for a successful and rewarding year.

Achieving your goals is easier with the right assistance. At PIDC, we’re committed to helping Philadelphia’s business owners succeed. With financing, business support services, and resource sharing, we’re here to help you turn your 2025 goals into a reality.
