Campus Philly announced the release of Choosing Philadelphia, a 2014 special report that examines the factors important to Philadelphia college students, including why new graduates are electing to stay in the Greater Philadelphia region.

The report indicates that 64 percent of recent graduates are choosing Philadelphia immediately after graduation, and 61 percent call Philadelphia home at the time of the survey.

“Great cities welcome new residents and send forth great talent and that’s what sets them apart from other places,” said Deborah Diamond, president of Campus Philly. “This study shows that recent college graduates are choosing Philadelphia in large numbers and that those who leave the region serve as ambassadors for Philadelphia because they feel so positively about it.”

In addition to showing how many recent graduates choose Philadelphia after graduation, the study documents college students’ high level of involvement and engagement with the city and region. Evidence of high student engagement with Greater Philadelphia includes off-campus social activities (93 percent); internships (81 percent) and community service (50 percent). Each of these engagement activities represents an increase over a similar study conducted by Campus Philly in 2010.

“From this report and through our ongoing work on-campus, we know college students want opportunities to connect to internships, jobs, and the larger community, and Campus Philly is committed to making that happen,” Diamond said.

Seventy-seven percent of recent graduates surveyed were familiar with Campus Philly’s range of programs, up from 65 percent in the 2010 study.

“Talented, college-educated young people are increasingly drawn to Philadelphia, a trend that Campus Philly is thrilled to encourage and support,” Diamond noted.

Seventy-three percent of new graduates would recommend Philadelphia as a place to live, up from 55 percent in 2010.

The study, based on 3,390 responses of graduates from 40 regional institutions, was conducted by Campus Philly during the summer of 2014 in partnership with regional colleges and universities. A summary report and full report is available at campusphilly.org/choosingPHL.

Choosing Philadelphia was made possible by a presenting sponsorship from Deloitte. Additional support was provided by Ben Franklin Technology Partners and The City of Philadelphia.
