As the 2023-2024 school year comes to an end, it is time to start applying for internships. Landing an internship in your desired field of work can help you decide what will be the right fit, improve your skill sets with hands-on experience, expand your network, and gain critical experience in working with a team. Whether you are an undergraduate, graduate, or new grad, there are many internships that can help you grow in your career. Looking for tips on how to succeed once you land an internship? Here are a few recommendations on how you can get the best out of your future internship experience, from a current PIDC intern!

  1. Shadow team members

As you are starting your internship, shadowing a team member will allow you to see what a typical day looks like for full-time staff and give you insight into how things work. The work day of your manager or someone from a different team can be full of many tasks that you may be interested in beyond the projects that you are assigned as an intern.

  1. Be on time

Prepare the time that it will take for you to travel to work and be on time for meetings. Arriving a few minutes early will allow you to look over notes that you have taken the day before and show your team that you are involved and eager to learn for the day. If you happen to be late, be sure to contact your team and let them know ahead of time.

  1. Ask Questions

Be curious about everything. Ask questions pertaining to projects and the history of the company. No question is too big or small and it shows that you are engaged and willing to expand your knowledge on what you are asking about.

  1. Keep track of your projects

Put together a detailed project list with every task that you are assigned and have completed. Doing so will help you keep track of your progress, write your resume, manage your workload, and can help guide your team in the future.

  1. Get to know your team

Do not be intimidated by the sound of laughter coming from the cafe or break room. Join the other interns and team members for lunch to get to know each other. You may not work with everyone but this will be a great opportunity to put a name to a face while networking. To start a conversation, ask questions about their current position at the company and share your college experience and what you are working on as an intern.

  1. Ask for feedback and how you can improve

Your weekly check-ins with your manager are a great time to ask for feedback and how you can improve on projects that you are having trouble on. It is better to express concern or interest in projects that could help you improve your skills. This is an internship and a great time to take full advantage of the opportunities that will open for you.

  1. Don’t be afraid to share your ideas

Whether you have an idea for a new project or process, pitch it to your team. Be sure to explain thoroughly how the team or company can benefit from the idea, the target audience, and why the company should be interested in your idea.

Internships are a valuable experience and can be very exciting. This part of your career will allow you to work in businesses large or small. As you apply to internships, use these tips to get the best of your experience at PIDC.
