On May 1, PIDC staff joined local, environmentally friendly apparel company United by Blue for their monthly clean up at Bartram’s Garden. Nearly 50 PIDC volunteers trekked along the Lower Schuylkill River collecting over 25 bags of trash and large objects weighing in at a total of 773 pounds.

Some fun finds included a fortune cookie, a Christmas wreath, a valet parking sign, and a ceramic bowl and spoon. PIDC staff enjoyed the opportunity to work together outside the office and get their hands dirty for a good cause.

United by Blue is an ocean-friendly brand of apparel that removes a pound of trash from oceans and waterways for every product sold. The company says that by combining every business transaction with an environmental action, they are able to use their business to do the most good possible. United by Blue has organized cleanups in 15 states and two countries.

Bartram’s Garden is a 45–acre National Historic Landmark operated by the John Bartram Association in cooperation with the City of Philadelphia. A unique treasure, Bartram’s Garden is best known as the home, farm, and garden of John Bartram, America’s first naturalist, botanist, and plant explorer. John Bartram, inspired by nature and his love of plants, dedicated his life to better understanding the world around him and shared his knowledge with his neighbors and friends as well as an international community of scientists, botanists, and curious plant collectors. The Bartram family cultivated the garden and farmlands, establishing one of the country’s first and largest commercial nurseries by 1850.

PIDC was proud to partner with United by Blue and Bartram’s Garden in their efforts to keep our environment clean and look forward to working with them again in the future.
