PIDC is governed by a thirty-member Board of Directors, appointed by the Mayor of Philadelphia and the President of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. The staff includes approximately 60 full-time employees, and PIDC’s current 12-member senior leadership team has a combined 150+ years of experience at PIDC. The organization’s annual budget of approximately $12M is funded by a combination from fees generated by PIDC’s transaction activities, service and management contracts, and contributed revenue.

POSITION OVERVIEW & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Summer Events & Communications Intern will support the Navy Yard Marketing and Engagement team in the planning, promotion, and execution of a dynamic portfolio of public programs and community initiatives. This role offers hands-on experience in event production, marketing communications, and community engagement.

Working closely with the Events & Engagement Manager, the intern will assist with the coordination of summer programming, contribute to content creation and digital storytelling, and help implement promotional strategies across multiple platforms.

This is an ideal opportunity for an undergraduate student interested in event management, marketing, communications, nonprofit management, or community programming. The position is required to work a 37.5 hours per week, hybrid schedule.

Event Planning & Execution

  • Assist with planning and on-site execution of summer public programs and community events.
  • Support event logistics including scheduling, run-of-show development, vendor coordination, and supply management.
  • Assist with event setup, registration, event oversight, and breakdown.
  • Track event details including timelines, checklists, and operational documents.
  • Provide support coordinating with partner organizations and community collaborators.
  • Marketing, Communications & Content Creation
  • Assist in developing and executing promotional strategies for public events.
  • Create and schedule content for social media platforms and digital marketing channels
  • Draft promotional copy for event listings, blog entries, and website updates.
  • Capture event photography and video content for social media and marketing use.
  • Help maintain brand consistency across marketing materials and communications
  • Assist with tracking marketing metrics and audience engagement Catalogue Navy Yard photo assets and conversion of historic mediums (slides, negatives, print) to digital format

Community Engagement

  • Support communications with event partners and vendors.
  • Assist with outreach efforts to promote programs and increase audience participation Support and attend Navy Yard presentations, tours, employee orientations, and other community engagement efforts
  • Assist with outreach for community engagement efforts, providing logistical support at community meetings, and compile feedback for analysis

Administrative & Program Support
• Assist with event documentation, reporting, and internal communications.
• Help organize project files, contracts, permits, and event materials.
• Support budget tracking documentation
• Contribute to post-event evaluations and program recaps

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate or graduate student with relevant coursework or experience in Marketing, Communications, Event Management, Public Relations, Urban Planning, Economic Development, or related field.
  • Strong writing, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously with strong attention to detail
  • Familiarity with social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and X
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook and Excel
  • Flexibility and willingness to contribute to a variety of projects and tasks as needs arise

Preferred Skills

  • Experience creating digital content for social media or marketing platforms
  • Familiarity with Canva or Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) for basic graphic design and marketing materials
  • Photography, video, or event documentation experience is a plus
