On July 12, 2012 Spectrum Health Services (SHS) celebrated the groundbreaking of a $14 million health facility in West Philadelphia. The 36,000 square foot facility located at 52nd and Haverford Avenue will be the new Haddington Health Center, and is expected to be completed in July 2013.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Mayor Michael Nutter, Spectrum Health CEO Phyllis B. Cater, PA State Senator Vincent Hughes, City Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell, State Representative Vanessa Lowrey Brown, State Representative Dwight Evans, and many project supporters and members of the local community.

Phyllis B. Cater, Spectrum CEO, said, “The new building will be state-of-the-art. Medically, the space will allow us to become a ‘medical home,’ fostering collaboration among medical, social service, behavioral and health education professionals.  Architecturally, it is designed as a ‘green building,’ that will insure significant energy efficiencies including geo-thermal, solar and water source heat pump systems while providing a more user friendly and patient oriented facility.

It is anticipated that over the next five years, SHS will provide over 60,000 visits in the new Haddington Health Center. It will feature a new dental health program, expanded behavioral health services, and a demonstration kitchen to help teach healthy eating and cooking.  Up to 70 new employees will be added, making it one of West Philadelphia’s most significant economic development initiatives this year.

The Health Center includes approximately $14 million in financing, led by a $2 million grant from the City’s Brownfields Economic Development Initiative (BEDI), a $1.7 million Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, as well as loans of $2.4 million, all administered through PIDC.

“The Spectrum Health Services Community Health Center is a great public-private partnership that is moving Philadelphia forward,” said Mayor Michael A. Nutter, who led a contingent of state and local elected officials participating in the groundbreaking.  “The City’s commitment, working through PIDC, is to provide support for projects that improve the lives of people living in our neighborhoods, generates meaningful job opportunities, and works to restore the fabric of our communities by improving blighted land and buildings.

“This great new facility meets all of these goals, and most importantly, it will improve the delivery of critical health services in West Philadelphia,” the Mayor said.

PIDC was proud to work with SHS and be involved in the financing of this project.  The Haddington Health Center will be a state-of-the-art facility servicing thousands of West Philadelphia residents for a long time to come.

Spectrum Health Services, Inc. (SHS) is a 501c(3) non-profit community health agency and has been offering health and wellness services to Philadelphia women and families since 1967.
