Summer Interns 2016This summer, PIDC had the pleasure to work with eight interns from universities across the country. We love the energy and enthusiasm these talented students bring to working here and we know that they have come to see Philadelphia as a promising place to start and grow a career after graduation.

Over the course of the summer, PIDC’s interns have contributed to the various departments’ missions, administrative work, research, and marketing initiatives.

At PIDC Center City Office

Project Finance

Andrew Durkin
Hometown: Doylestown, PA
College and Degree Program:  La Salle University; Economics and Political Science
Project Focus and Outcomes: Health center research and project recommendations

After PIDC: I will spend the fall semester studying abroad in Galway, Ireland.

Marketing and Business Development

Dara Liss
Hometown:  Cheltenham, PA
College and Degree Program: Emory University; Double major in Business Administration- Concentration: Finance and Arabic Studies
Project Focus and Outcomes: I analyzed PIDC’s Capital Project Loan to understand and quantify the financing gap these loans fill for Philadelphia businesses. I helped craft the impact story of the capital project loan explaining how this product has changed as PIDC has expanded its loan offerings. I created a master list of minority-owned, women-owned, and disabled-owned businesses in Philadelphia to help PIDC continue the expansion of its Contract Line of Credit loan program. Utilizing this master list, I created and designed a direct mailer and e-mail campaign targeting these contractors.

After PIDC: I’m looking forward to spending the fall semester studying abroad in Israel.

Trevor Smith
Hometown: Willingboro, NJ
College and Degree Program: University of Cincinnati, College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP), Masters of Community Planning (MCP)
Project Focus and Outcomes: I assisted in business development intake, client relations, marketing, and communications focused in PIDC’s targeted market sectors: commercial businesses, corporate and commercial development, industrial businesses, and nonprofit organizations. In addition I helped target our key referral partners in professional services. I assisted in the implementation of our brand strategy, event planning, and execution of client events and technical assistance workshops. I designed our Navy Yard Geofilters for social media, assisted in database management in our CRM software — Salesforce and Portfol, created and designed content for the PIDC monthly newsletter, and designed real estate marketing collateral for client and intermediary outreach.

Operations

Je’Da Mills
Hometown: Harrisburg, PA
College and Degree Program: Penn State, Business: Management and Marketing Graduate: May 2017
Project Focus and Outcomes: Working with accounts payable, accounts receivables, and etc. to gather support for the auditors.
Favorite Quote, Advice or Joke: Know what you want in life and don’t settle for less.
After PIDC: I’m currently still trying to figure things out. But, after graduation hopefully I can stay in the Philadelphia area and find a job that I enjoy.

Real Estate

Matthew Skelly
Hometown: Collegeville PA
College and Degree Program:Ball State University; Urban Planning
Project Focus and Outcomes:I updated and managed land bank databank, created scrapyard cleanup initiative, located potential sites for a land swap, and updated contact information for RFQ email blasts.

After PIDC: Graduating Ball State University in the fall and looking to work as a real estate analyst in Philadelphia.

Financial Services 

Tristina Sinopoli
Hometown: Toronto, Canada
College and Degree Program: University of Pennsylvania; Master of City Planning – concentration community and economic development
Project Focus and Outcomes: I completed New Markets Tax Credits Portfolio Report, which evaluated the social and economic impacts of PIDC’s NMTC investments.

Marketing and Real Estate

Kara Dwyer
Hometown: Blue Bell, Pennsylvania
College and Degree Program: Rising senior in the Fox School of Business undergraduate marketing major at Temple University
Project Focus and Outcomes: I focused on the marketing and communications side at The Navy Yard office. I was able to schedule Lunch Truck Lineup, I created a Navy Yard wide Summer Photo Contest, event e-blasts, social media, and something I am very proud of, getting snapchat geofilters for the Navy Yard and Central Green!
Favorite Quote, Advice, or Joke: My advice is, don’t be afraid to speak up! If you have an idea, or suggestion, say something! It can take you a long way.
After PIDC: I am going to finish up my senior year at Temple University and hopefully get a job in marketing/communications at a non-profit organization.

Energy Operations and Initiatives

Eliza Daeschler
Hometown: Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, PA
College and Degree Program: The University of Vermont, Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources; Majoring in Environmental Studies: Sustainability, Minoring in Sustainable Landscape Horticulture and Public Communications.
Project Focus and Outcomes: Helping work on on-going projects, assisting in coordination of large events and writing a paper about the Economic and Social Benefits of the Micro-grid at The Navy Yard.
Favorite Quote, Advice or Joke: Learn everything you can about Philadelphia. There are so many amazing and important things going on here!
After PIDC: I will be finishing my undergraduate degree at UVM, while interning at Burlington Parks and Recreation.
