This November, PIDC will kick off an eight month series of workshops on various topics for the Spanish speaking business community

PHILADELPHIA (October 21, 2021) – This November, PIDC, Philadelphia’s public-private economic development corporation, will kick off an eight month series of workshops in Spanish as part of its strategy to assist Spanish-speaking entrepreneurs, one of the fastest growing business groups in Philadelphia. Business Builder Workshops En Español will address a variety of business topics and will be led by Hispanic and Latino(a) professionals. The series is part of PIDC’s Business Builder Workshops — year-round workshops which provide critical business education to entrepreneurs and organizations from every industry. Presented by subject matter experts and with an innovative approach, these workshops are foundational in building skills, making connections, and providing components needed to reach strategic growth goals. The Business Builder Workshops En Español are free, culturally-relevant, and specifically targeted to established businesses.

PIDC is partnering with Balance Consulting Group LLC, a Hispanic woman-owned company, to produce Business Builder Workshops En Español. Balance Consulting Group focuses on addressing the specific needs of Latino(a) entrepreneurs and providing performance standards to maximize implementation of processes. Kersy Azocar, principal and CEO of Balance Consulting Group, formerly served as a senior vice president of microlending at FINANTA, a community development financial institution (CDFI). Earlier this year, Kersy collaborated with PIDC as PIDC’s project manager for the Pennsylvania COVID-19 Hospitality Industry Recovery Program (CHIRP), a $17 million dollar grant program created by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to support businesses in the hospitality industry.

Business Builder Workshops En Español support PIDC’s broader RESTART Action Plan which focuses on how PIDC is adapting specific core strategies to drive an equitable and inclusive economic recovery.

PIDC recognizes the tremendous impact Hispanic and Latino(a) entrepreneurs have had on the local and U.S. economies. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, Hispanic and Latino(a)-owned businesses are the fastest-growing segment of U.S. small businesses with the number of business owners having grown to 34% in the last 10 years. Through the Business Builder Workshops En Español, PIDC aims to provide resources to further support business growth by covering pertinent topics such as building credit, establishing accounting systems, budgeting, City resources, buying and financing commercial real estate, leadership, and more in Spanish.

“This is an excellent idea! PIDC is a good institution and workshops in Spanish are good for the Latino(a) community. My commercial building was financed by PIDC. This is a good way to promote what they do,” says Miguel Peralta, owner of Corner Food Market Inc. and PIDC client.

“We have small businesses, but we also want and dream to be bigger. That is why we want to learn how to apply for credit and to grow our businesses. I don’t only want to dream; I want to grow into a large  business,” says Alma Romero, owner of Alma del Mar Restaurant.

Business Builder Workshops En Español is the first of a strategic plan to deliver more language-specific initiatives to match the growing, diverse business community in Philadelphia.
