Access provided by Philadelphia’s transportation infrastructure is unparalleled among U.S. cities, with robust passenger and freight rail, air, shipping and ground transportation systems radiating out from the middle of the dense Northeast corridor. Of these options, the Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) has become the crown jewel of Philadelphia’s transportation infrastructure.

With over 500 domestic and international passenger flights a day, 26 airlines, six cargo facilities, and 2,410k acres of land with numerous businesses opening franchises on site, the airport is continuously growing. PHL, the only major airport serving the nation’s 7th largest metropolitan area, is a large hub airport serving more than 30 million passengers annually. The airlines offer nearly 500 daily departures to nearly 140 destinations worldwide. Located 7 miles from downtown Philadelphia, the Airport is easily accessible and convenient to many tourist sites, business centers, and cultural hubs. The Airport is self-sustaining and uses no local tax dollars. PHL is one of the largest economic engines in the region, generating $15.4 billion to the economy and accounting for 96,300 full-time jobs annually.

Passengers aren’t the only thing the airport transports. The Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) has become a staple in the flow of logistics and distribution throughout the years. It provides standard and specialty air cargo services, as well as inbound and outbound passenger flights.

Specialty cargo, including temperature-sensitive, regulated, and high-value products, are
efficiently handled at dedicated facilities, such as American Airlines’ state-of-the-art
refrigerated warehouse and logistics hub. PHL is the overnight small package center
for the entire 5,000-square mile metropolitan area, as well as a major cargo hub for
UPS, which can handle up to 95,000 packages per hour, with same day service to the
eastern US and Western Europe.

Early on, PIDC sold some land to the Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) to help with airport expansion efforts. In addition, over the years, PIDC has provided financing and helped connect small businesses and contractors to the expansion efforts.
