Olivieri and Associates Inc., a heavy-highway construction company based in South Philadelphia, has made major strides since its founding in 1999. Performing as a subcontractor for PennDOT on projects such as I-95 ramps and the City of Philadelphia Streets department installing curbs and sidewalks, Olivieri and Associates has established itself as a highly skilled and experienced contractor.

“My business is unique because it is woman-owned in a predominantly male-owned field,” said Maria Olivieri, owner. Being outnumbered by her male counterparts hasn’t deterred or slowed her down but has been the fuel to her success.

The company’s goal is to grow and develop a WBE-certified construction firm operating as both a subcontractor and prime contractor. A vital part of this growth meant having access to working capital, and as the company continued expanding, Olivieri and Associates sought help from PIDC.

“PIDC provided financing for job equipment and job financing,” said Maria. Having access to capital through PIDC financing has allowed Olivieri and Associates to bid on larger projects, grow the portfolio of work, and increase the company’s revenue. One recent project in which PIDC helped finance was a contract with the City of Philadelphia for the restoration of the historically certified 300 block of South Philip Street, a 6.5 foot wide mid-18th century cartway. The street is located in the heart of the most historic district in Philadelphia and had been damaged for years.

As featured in the South Philly Review, construction workers, local residents, and Councilman Mark Squilla came together to celebrate the completion of the project earlier this year. The complex restoration work of Olivieri and Associates did not go unnoticed: the company received the 2019 Grand Jury Award for Restoration from the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia and the Initiative Award—Local Government from the Pennsylvania Historic Preservation Awards.

In addition to the honors in completing this historic project and countless public accolades for the company’s consistent excellence in performance and customer service, Maria’s most rewarding part of her job is “seeing the overwhelming support and appreciation from the community when a project is complete.” This woman-owned company and proud PIDC client continues to leave its mark in a male-dominated field.
