This summer, almost a dozen talented interns joined PIDC to learn and assist us in driving growth to every corner of Philadelphia. Get to know our interns and the PIDC departments they assist. Plus, see why they think Philadelphia is a great place to study, work, and play.

Most interesting thing learned while working at PIDC:

The Navy Yard was home to the first hydraulic catapults to help launch planes from aircraft carriers. They used to be tested by catapulting cars into the Delaware and can still be seen by a visit or a look at aerial photos of the East side of the Yard!

Philadelphia is a great place to study, work, and play because:

It’s full of smart, humble, and fiercely loyal people. Who else would you want as students, colleagues or friends?

Most interesting thing learned while working at PIDC:

The most interesting thing that I’ve learned while at PIDC is that office jobs aren’t as boring as television sometimes portray it to be. Here at PIDC the people are always smiling and upbeat. They even have things like luncheons, corridor walks, and tours.

Philadelphia is a great place to study, work, and play because:

There are different people you can meet. Attractions like parks to sit and enjoy the lively city. There are museums to visit, and the food becomes almost addicting in a way.

Most interesting thing learned while working at PIDC:

Learning about all the different levels and steps it takes to complete a real estate transaction is really fascinating and has given me a newfound appreciation for all of the growth and development happening in Philadelphia today.

Philadelphia is a great place to study, work, and play because:

I can’t say or give one reason. I love everything about Philadelphia and believe it’s the greatest city on earth. And I love the Philly sports teams.

Most interesting thing learned while working at PIDC:

As a newcomer to Philadelphia, it was really interesting to learn about how PIDC’s work, now and in the past, fits into the context of Philadelphia’s history and how the city has experienced so much growth and success over the past few decades.

Philadelphia is a great place to study, work, and play because:

There are so many educational and professional opportunities to take advantage of, but there is also always things going on to take a break from school and work. The city is constantly changing and growing. I’m excited to explore it!

Most interesting thing learned while working at PIDC:

One of the most interesting things I have learned through my internship is the history of PAID and the tax exempt status of industrial development bonds.

Philadelphia is a great place to study, work, and play because:

It’s home, not just to me, but to a lot of Philadelphians. Unlike other nearby major cities, Philly is not a transient city. The people who live here are more likely to develop roots and become invested in their communities. As a result, Philadelphia and each of its distinct neighborhoods have a unique sense of character and pride.

Most interesting thing learned while working at PIDC:

The amount of different departments it takes to coordinate and collaborate to complete projects is very interesting.

Philadelphia is a great place to study, work, and play because:

The amount and variety of fun things to do in the city is vast. You can do anything from playing golf in Franklin Square to lying in hammocks in Spruce Street Harbor Park to getting delicious food in Chinatown.

Most interesting thing learned while working at PIDC:

It was so interesting to observe how a smart grid operates since this is expected to be the future of how power will be distributed. It is amazing to be involved with technology that will be revolutionary to my field of study.

Philadelphia is a great place to study, work, and play because:

The city is growing rapidly in comparison to the other major cities on the east coast of the United States. This growth includes both the business and cultural sides. Business is booming with all the new and renovated buildings in Center City. Culture is growing, too, with the myriad of entertainment and concerts at Penn’s Landing, the Made in America festival every September, and the other events that go on in the city every year.

Most interesting thing learned while working at PIDC:

It’s been very interesting to see firsthand how challenging it can be to define and measure impact. For example, there are many ways to a define a “quality job.” Depending on how you define it and phrase questions in reporting forms, you’ll get very different answers!

Philadelphia is a great place to study, work, and play because:

There are a lot of people here that care about social and economic justice – from people at PIDC working to make Philadelphia a national hub for impact investing, to grassroots organizers pushing for affordable housing, immigrant rights, and progressive climate policies.

Most interesting thing learned while working at PIDC:

PIDC has clients and projects in 96% of zip codes in Philadelphia. It’s amazing that they are truly everywhere!

Philadelphia is a great place to study, work, and play because:

People are passionate about the city’s growth and development, believe in its future, and are dedicated to the city’s success.

Most interesting thing learned while working at PIDC:

About half of the US population is within a day’s drive of Philadelphia, with somewhere around 40 million people within 200 miles.

Philadelphia is a great place to study, work, and play because:

In general, high university density, quality healthcare, cheaper housing, and good food give Philadelphia an edge over comparable cities. For me, the best thing about Philadelphia is that it doesn’t feel like a large city (due to a quick commute and the excellent park system). My time at PIDC has been a great experience, thanks to the kind and dedicated people who work here.

Most interesting thing learned while working at PIDC:

The most interesting thing I have learned while working at PIDC is just how involved PIDC is in the economic development of Philadelphia’s communities. I can see firsthand how this organization is the catalyst for so much of what goes into making this city the hotspot that it is today.

Philadelphia is a great place to study, work, and play because:

You can really make a home out of the entire city. It is of manageable size with improving infrastructure, cool museums, fun nightlife spread out across the city, and well-regarded universities. Philadelphia also houses offices of some of the world’s largest companies as well as small and mid-size businesses that are the backbone of the city’s economy. In addition to holding all of these components to an attractive lifestyle, Philadelphia has a history of unique institutions that give it character like Boathouse Row, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, all Philadelphia sports, the Tower Theater, and many more.
