So far in 2018, a few hundred people learned from business experts, gained tools to reach their business goals, and networked with Philadelphia business owners of a variety of industries at one or more of PIDC’s 24 Business Builder Workshops.
This year started off with a bang! As tax season kicked off for the New Year, we presented our 3-Part Series: Navigating through City Taxes, in partnership with the City’s Revenue Department and the Temple University Fox School of Business, to help attendees more easily navigate the world of business taxes at the city level. This series helped us all get a better understanding of taxes and credits like BIRT, Wage and Earnings taxes, Job Creation Tax credits, and Property tax. We also held a special session on Interpreting the New Tax Code: Impact on Small Businesses.
One of our highlights every year is our focus on the construction industry. Kicking off with Survival Tactics in the Construction Industry: Small Fish in a Large Pond, this workshop was an obvious hit with contractors. Featuring Michael Brown, founder and owner of Environmental Construction Services, Inc., a graduate of PIDC partner Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses, and a PIDC client, the workshop gave attendees a behind-the-scenes look at how to successfully navigate the terrain in the local construction industry. Next up, we offered our 4-Part Construction Series beginning with Expectations of a Prime Contractor, followed by Hidden Costs of Construction Bidding, Construction Bonding, and Construction Law, Liens & Dispute Resolution. Continuing with construction-related topics, we offered the Basics of Certified Payrolls in partnership with the City’s Office of Labor Standards, to help attendees get the certified payroll process right the first time. With all these construction-related workshops we were able to engage our contractors as they learn best practices to avoid pitfalls in the construction industry.
Business growth is often hindered by the lack of business knowledge, financing and contract awards. The Small Business Administration’s 8(a) program is specifically designed to address these components and position companies to thrive in a competitive business environment, so PIDC started March off with partnering with the SBA in offering the workshop, 8(a) Certification: Accelerating Your Business Growth & Making It Last. Seeking more ways to identify growth opportunities, we partnered with the Philadelphia Housing Authority (PHA) in sponsoring the workshop, Interpreting PHA’s Section 3 Regulations.
Unfortunately, many businesses that deal with data breaches do not have a backup plan. Thus, PIDC brought in James Carty, chief security officer of the FBI Philadelphia division, to present Cybersecurity: Protecting Your Business Assets workshop, as we closed out March.
We opened up April with our LCPtracker workshop, a hands-on training session to introduce construction companies to the City’s new on-line system for submitting certified payrolls. We offered Your Personal Credit for Business Growth and the 2-part Buying Commercial Real Estate series, which included a primer on commercial real estate and the local zoning process. In the other April workshops, in addition to hosting a Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses information session, we again partnered with the SBA in offering Doing Business with the Federal Government.
In June, Google Adwords led the month’s workshop offerings, along with another Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses information session. In recognition of technology and the part it plays in the growth of small businesses, we had the pleasure of hosting Meet Ben, an introduction to Ben Franklin Technology Partners. Afterwards, we closed the month by bringing back two popular workshops, on Your Personal Credit for Business Growth and Strategies for Preparing Financial Projections.
