On May 1, The Greater Philadelphia Innovation Cluster for Energy Efficient Buildings (GPIC) became the Energy Efficient Buildings Hub (EEB Hub).  The EEB Hub is focused on reducing energy consumption in the commercial building sector by 20 percent by 2020 through informed people, validated information, and proven technologies.

With a more focused brand identity, the EEB Hub will be better positioned to design, demonstrate, and deploy market-proven solutions in the Greater Philadelphia region so that the buildings sector accomplishes its full potential for ongoing energy efficiency.

In 2010, following a highly competitive national selection process, the EEB Hub received $129 million from the federal government, including $122 million from the U.S. Department of Energy, to develop innovative energy efficient building technologies, designs, and systems. The EEB Hub’s location at The Navy Yard, which has its own power grid and an existing building stock ideally suited for demonstration projects, will allow the initiative to achieve its ambitious goal to have technologies and methods for making buildings 20 percent more energy efficient widely available within 10 years.

As one of the five founding partners in the EEB Hub, PIDC assists the EEB Hub management team and Penn State University on specific tasks related to the renovation of their headquarters-Building 661, Navy Yard building and site research, and the implementation of a series of demonstration projects.
