FringeArts is Philadelphia’s home for contemporary performance, presenting progressive, world-class art that expands the imagination and boldly defies expectation. Founded in 1997 as the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, the program moved in 2013 into its first permanent home with help from PIDC — renovating a historic pumping station for the city’s fire trucks into a state-of-the-art performance center. It was then that it was able to transition from the Fringe Festival into FringeArts — a year round producing organization.

As FringeArts expanded, their signature event — The Fringe Festival — became even bigger and better. According to their website, the Fringe Festival is a 17-day, city-wide celebration of innovation and creativity in contemporary performance. Each September, the Festival explodes into every nook and cranny in neighborhoods across Philadelphia with more than 1,000 artistically daring performances, including national and international performances curated by FringeArts, and works that are produced by independent artists and promoted by FringeArts.

When FringeArts was looking for a permanent location to showcase the world’s most cutting-edge artists, PIDC assisted them in identifying and acquiring a former City water pumping station. PIDC also administered a state grant to help transform the building into their ideal home, complete with performance space, offices, and an on-site restaurant, bar, and beer garden. FringeArts now presents a compelling lineup of performances year-round, and has become a vibrant gathering place where performers and audiences can advance the global dialogue about art.
