The life sciences community was in full force in Philadelphia for a jam-packed BIO Conference This year. On June 3-6, Philadelphia welcomed over 18,000 attendees from around the globe for unparalleled partnering, education, and networking at this year’s 2019 BIO International Convention. Attendees received access to global biotech and pharma leaders, exposure to industry thought-leaders with over 500 education sessions available, and numerous networking opportunities with over 16,000 attendees from 67 countries. A few PIDC staff members served on event panels to share their expertise in the field, especially as it relates to growing businesses in the biotech fields moving to Philadelphia.

PIDC is also a part of Select Greater Philadelphia Council’s informal regional host committee which focuses on highlighting regional assets in order to attract national and international companies to the region, growing the region’s already flourishing life sciences sector. The committee assisted with events for BIO Week, including hosting the Greater Philadelphia Life Sciences and Innovation Showcase, an exclusive, invitation-only presentation at the Comcast Technology Center. The event provided guests from all around the world the opportunity to connect with industry leaders, hear from dynamic experts leading the way in the life sciences, and preview the future of health care – all being driven right here in Greater Philadelphia. Working in partnership with the Chamber’s CEO Council for Growth and dozens of organizations from across the region, Select has helped develop and implement a series of initiatives to maximize marketing and business attraction activities around BIO 2019.

Plus, PIDC hosted 50 BIO conference attendees on a tour of the Navy Yard, home to hundreds of emerging and established companies, including a large life sciences cluster, in a mix of world-class office and R&D space and adaptively-reused historic buildings. The tour featured multiple stops, including GSK, WuXi Advanced Therapies, Coriell Life Sciences, and Adaptimmune.

Philadelphia and its surrounding tri-state areas possess a remarkable biotechnology and life sciences community. According to the 2019 BIO International Convention website, Philadelphia is among the top tier of states in key measures of bioscience innovation ecosystem in patents awarded to state investors and it is 11% more concentrated in bioscience employment than the national average. Plus, Philadelphia is the best city in the US for diversity in STEM fields, according to SmartAsset. Invest Philadelphia 2019 mentioned there is more than 11 million square feet of affordable life sciences space alone. The Greater Philadelphia region is the original home of cell and gene therapy and where it continues to rapidly grow.
