For more than 25 years, Uniform Gear has been outfitting the people who serve Philadelphia and the surrounding region. Founded in 2001 by Philadelphia police officer James Weldon Jr., the family-owned business has grown from selling shoes and accessories out of a garage and truck to operating three locations across the region. After graduating from college, his daughters Jessica Weldon and Jamie Leigh joined their father in the business, eventually taking over ownership and leading Uniform Gear into its next phase of growth.
Today, the sisters continue their father’s vision by supporting the people who serve their communities, providing the uniforms, gear, and personal service that public safety professionals rely on every day. With support from PIDC, they’ve also taken a major step in securing the company’s future by purchasing the Philadelphia location they’ve called home for 25 years.
Behind every uniform is someone who has chosen to serve. Uniform Gear outfits the first responders, law enforcement officers, transportation workers and other public servants who show up for their communities every day. For Weldon and Leigh, serving these customers means more than providing uniforms and equipment. “Our clients choose a line of work serving our communities which is extremely commendable,” said Weldon. “They serve the public every day, not always getting the recognition for all they do.”
The Uniform Gear team strives to create an environment where customers feel welcomed and supported, even when they are coming in during a difficult day.
“Our goal is to offer a warm welcoming environment for our clients that hopefully make them forget about the stress of the job,” Weldon explained. “Our staff is friendly and helpful and we always offer a listening ear for those who might be having a stressful day.”
That personal connection has become an important part of the company’s identity. Uniform Gear is often there for its customers during some of the most meaningful moments of their careers—from helping new recruits prepare for their first day on the job to supporting departments through difficult losses.
“When departments experience a loss, we are there to help them so they have one less thing to worry about during that time,” the sisters said. The company also contributes to fundraisers for departments and employees in need. “Being there for these moments and being a helping hand is really the true impact of our work.”
Growing With Their Customers
Uniform Gear has evolved alongside the needs of its customers, growing from its family garage into three locations across Philadelphia, Bucks County and Delaware County. As the business has expanded, the sisters have taken a deliberate approach to growth, making sure their staff and equipment can keep pace with demand. “We believe our commitment to slow, steady growth is key,” Weldon said. “In this industry, you cannot grow faster than the amount of equipment/staff that can service the customers.”
That approach allows Uniform Gear to maintain fast turnaround times and the level of service its customers have come to expect, even as the business continues to grow.
The company’s three locations are another important part of its strategy. With customers living throughout the region, having multiple locations makes it easier for them to visit a convenient store for fittings, equipment, and other needs.
And the sisters credit their staff as another major reason for the company’s success. “It’s really important that everyone has a great, friendly experience in our locations,” said Weldon. “We try to offer a great environment to work in, which helps our staff to be happy and ready to help our clients. From themes around the holidays to special lunches and paid holidays, we believe you can get the job done while enjoying where you work.” For the sisters, that investment in their team ultimately makes its way back to the customers they serve.
Finding the Right Partner to Secure the Future
In June 2025, Weldon and Leigh reached out to PIDC for assistance purchasing the building the family had rented for 25 years. Leigh had previously participated in Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses in 2015, which gave her an introduction to PIDC and its work supporting Philadelphia businesses. When the opportunity arose to purchase their longtime home, the sisters turned to PIDC for help making it possible.
“We were struggling to find great funding to purchase the building at 8063 Walker Street,” Weldon shared. “PIDC worked with us and offered the best terms we could find.” Uniform Gear closed on the property at the end of May 2026, marking a major milestone for the family-owned business and a new chapter in its Philadelphia story. “Acquiring our first location that we have rented for 25 years has secured our future in Philadelphia!”
Building a Business on Their Own Terms
For Uniform Gear, 25 years in business represents more than longevity—it represents a family legacy built on their own terms.
“Being a small business is not easy,” said Weldon. “Our greatest accomplishment is getting to where we are today with no private investors. We still own the business 100% and that is something we are very proud of.” This independence has given the sisters the freedom to grow at their own pace and invest in their team and customers.
What’s Next for Uniform Gear?
Big things are on the horizon for Uniform Gear. Earlier this year, the business was selected for a women’s grant from JVS Philadelphia Fund for Women to help purchase a direct-to-film printer. The new equipment will allow them to produce custom printed shirts in bulk entirely in-house, bringing a brand new capability under its own roof and opening the door to a new market.

INFORMATION WE MAY COLLECT
We may collect two types of data and information from our Users. The first type of information is nonidentifiable and anonymous information (“Non-Personal Information”). We are not aware of the identity of the User from which we have collected only the Non-Personal Information. Non-Personal Information which is being gathered consists of technical information and behavioral data regarding the activity of the User on the Service, operation system and browser, type of mobile device, and operating system version and settings, User’s screen resolution, duration of usage of the Service, User’s ‘clickstream’ on the Site, keyboard language, etc.
The second type of information is individually identifiable information (“Personal Information”). This information may, in itself or taken together with additional information available to us, identify an individual, or may be of a private and/or sensitive nature. Personal Information we collect includes: username, email address, phone number, your geo-location, your travel habits (such as routes, times of travel from one destination to another), your home address, office address or other favorite destinations, public transportation lines, stations and/or routes you may have saved or searched for, User’s search history on the Service, User’s most-used routes and stations, all User-generated data, User’s reports and reviews regarding the Service, your in-app settings, your rank and user profile including your nickname and avatar, in-app usage scores (“points”) you receive for using the Services, Facebook Access Token, Google Sign-In Token, Advertising ID, User IP address, and any additional information which the User actively chooses to provide.
The geo-location information we collect includes detailed location and route information, including GPS signals and other information sent by your mobile device for which the Service is installed and currently activated. We use this location and route information to create a detailed location history all of public transit trips.
We collect such information via your use of the Service and through information which you voluntarily provide and/or upload to the Service as further described in this Privacy Policy below, for purposes of providing the Service, enhancing the User’s experience and personalizing the Service and security purposes as further detailed below and.
If you choose to use the Services via a User Account you may create such User Account via Facebook Connect, Google Sign-In, personal Email address or other social networks. If you choose to use your social media network accounts then we may also have access to your public profile, which includes your name, gender, profile picture, age group and residency.
For avoidance of doubt, any Non-Personal Information connected or linked to any Personal Information is deemed as Personal Information as long as such connection or linkage exists.
HOW WE COLLECT INFORMATION ON OUR USERS
There are two main methods we use:
Use of the Service. We collect Non-Personal and Personal Information when you access or use the Service. In other words, we are aware of your usage of the Service and may gather, collect and record the information relating to such usage. We also collect Non-Personal and Personal Information derived from information we receive from third party services and providers we work with.

For avoidance of doubt, we may transfer and disclose or otherwise use Non-Personal Information or information which is linked to anonymous random identifiers or information that is aggregated in a nonidentifiable way, at its own discretion.

We may also provide additional transit-related services, including on-demand transit services, provided by its third party operational service partners (as they may evolve from time to time at our discretion). Such third party providers’ services include Gett, Uber and any other party, all of which are subject to a respective terms of use and privacy policies.
CREATING AN ACCOUNT USING SOCIAL NETWORKS
By signing onto our using your social network account (such as your Facebook account), you agree to provide us with information (including personal information) obtained from the social networks, for the purposes provided under this Privacy Policy. In the event that you create a User Account via your Facebook or Google social network account, we may have access to your public profile namely your name, gender, email address, photo, age group and residency. Your use of social networks to create your account is subject to the privacy policies and term of use of such third party social networks.
