As Philadelphia prepares for a summer filled with major celebrations for America’s 250th anniversary, international sporting events, and an influx of tourists visiting our city, local businesses had the opportunity to learn how to appear online, build their digital presence, and create connections with customers before they even enter their business.

In case you missed it, PIDC partnered with Visit Philadelphia to host a destination optimization workshop presented by Miles Partnership. Destination optimization is a strategic opportunity for business owners to improve their online visibility through platforms like TripAdvisor, Google Search, Google Maps, Apple Maps, and more to get discovered, build engagement, and showcase your business to potential customers.

Daecia Borgia, Visit Philly’s Destination Stakeholder Engagement Manager, opened the event with an introduction to Visit Philadelphia, highlighting the organization’s role as the city’s official tourism marketing agency for events, food, hotels, attractions, and more. Visit Philadelphia continues to support small business growth by partnering with organizations that provide expert guidance and resources, helping businesses expand their reach and create meaningful experiences for both residents and travelers.

Kim Palmer, Miles Partnerships Destination Optimization Program Director, hosted a 2-hour session on how business owners can improve their online presence and better connect with visitors and residents of Philadelphia.

Below are a few takeaways from the presentation on how business owners can connect with current and future customers:

1. Build a Strong Digital Presence

Building a strong digital presence will build a strong customer pipeline. Businesses should make sure their Google Business Profile is current and up-to-date. Include hours of operation, links to your website and social media profiles, phone numbers, and your physical address.

Visitors and residents can easily find your business hours, learn about your services, and plan their visit ahead of time. By creating a seamless digital experience from the first click, you can help customers feel informed, confident, and ready to engage with your business — no matter the industry.

2. Invest in Good Photos

Without high-quality photos, potential customers may be less inclined to visit your business. A quick Google search can often lead directly to a sale, so if your profile appears outdated during a customer’s first scroll, it can result in missed purchasing opportunities. Showcase your business at its best by including well-lit photos in your Google Business Profile, and update them regularly.

3. Encourage Reviews & Customer Engagement

Customer reviews continue to remain one of the strongest forms of digital word of mouth marketing. Encourage your customers to leave reviews for your business online. These reviews can entice others to try your business and can also offer valuable insights for you to improve.

4. Understand the Importance of AI

Artificial intelligence is changing how consumers search for information online. AI-powered search tools increasingly pull information from:

  • Business listings
  • Reviews
  • Website content
  • Frequently asked questions
  • Social media activity

Google is using AI to answer questions about businesses directly in Search and Maps. These AI-generated summaries pull information directly from your Business Profile, website, and customer reviews to help users make decisions often without needing to click through to your website, so it’s critical that you keep your profile relevant and clear.
