PIDC was proud to partner with the City of Philadelphia’s Department of Commerce on the latest round of Boost Your Business, a program designed to help Philadelphia businesses grow, secure new contracts, increase revenue, and create local jobs. In 2024, PIDC and the Department of Commerce hosted information sessions for businesses interested in applying. Ultimately, more than 70 business owners applied for the program.

From these applicants, the Department of Commerce selected nearly 20 Philadelphia businesses to receive a $50,000 forgivable loan to grow. All business owners who completed the program and successfully met their stated growth goals have had their loans forgiven.

How PIDC is Supporting the Boost Your Business Program

As a criteria for having the loan forgiven, each participating business owner has been meeting one-on-one with PIDC’s Senior Vice President of Client Engagement, Marla Hamilton, to outline goals, strategies for growth, and ways to increase business visibility. This consists of in-person visits by PIDC to business owners’ sites to observe daily operations, understand how the businesses function, and assess the value they bring to the Philadelphia community.

In addition to individualized support, PIDC in partnership with the Department of Commerce has been hosting monthly sessions for business owners to learn from industry experts on various topics such as marketing, human resources, finance, and other key areas to support the growth and expansion of their enterprise.

To kick off the group sessions, PIDC President Jodie Harris led an in-depth discussion on the realities and challenges of leading and managing an organization. This session helped place business owners in the role of a company manager, guiding them through how to adopt the mindset, mission, strategies, and processes of successful leaders in business and organizational management.

The 20 business owners also had the opportunity to analyze a mock company’s social and digital presence in the session “Creating the Marketing Realm” with Wendy Verna from Octo Design. This interactive group session put the business owners into two teams that competed in an escape room-style challenge to unlock a safe, uncovering the barriers and challenges that may be steering consumers away from supporting their business.

Other sessions included “A CEO’s Playbook” presented by Johanna Glatin of JT Goldstein’s, “Building and Leading Teams,” presented by John S. Ondik of The Ondik Group, and more, all to help grow and position all businesses for success.

“By providing strong business support services to 20 local businesses, this program will help them seize new opportunities and build sustainable growth. This initiative is designed to build upon existing success by giving entrepreneurs the management and operational strategies, resources, and connections they need,” said Marla Hamilton, Senior Vice President of Client Engagement for PIDC. “Through one-on-one business advice, on-site visits, and peer-to-peer group sessions, business owners will be equipped to overcome challenges and prepared for whatever comes next in their journey.”

As the program continued, the awardees participated in two final group sessions designed as a pitch competition. Each entrepreneur delivered a five-minute presentation of their business, tailored either to attract potential investors or to share the story and vision behind their company. After each pitch, peers provided thoughtful, constructive feedback aimed at sharpening delivery and strengthening the overall message.
