On March 20, PIDC hosted a press event to kick off the yearlong celebration marking 25 years of successful redevelopment at the Navy Yard. City officials, key partners, board members, PIDC alumni, and more gathered to reflect on the history of the Navy Yard and hear PIDC’s Vision for making it Philadelphia’s newest neighborhood.

The event began with a welcome message from PIDC President Jodie Harris, who shared the history of PIDC’s stewardship of the Navy Yard since March 2000, at the request of the City of Philadelphia. Executive Vice President Kate McNamara followed by highlighting ongoing projects and the companies driving growth at the Navy Yard, emphasizing their continued success. Council President Kenyatta Johnson and Commerce Director Alba Martinez recognized the Navy Yard for its continued growth and innovation, highlighting that it now employs 15,000 people in quality jobs across fields like biotechnology, manufacturing, shipbuilding, and advanced materials. To honor this achievement, Philadelphia City Council recognized PIDC for 25 years of leadership in transforming the Navy Yard into a thriving center for innovation, jobs, and investment. The resolution also declared March 31–April 6 as Navy Yard Week, celebrating the redevelopment that has created new opportunities for the city.

PIDC was recently named to Fast Company’s prestigious list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies of 2025, earning the #7 spot in the Economic Development category in large part for its 25 years of successful redevelopment at the Navy Yard.

Leslie Smallwood-Lewis and Brian Cohen, Mosaic and Ensemble Partners, emphasized that the expansion of the Navy Yard goes beyond buildings—it’s about community. They discussed how the ongoing development will bring residents to live, work, and play at the Navy Yard for the next 20 years.
