In 1914, Philip Baur and Herbert Morris founded Tasty Baking Company with $50,000 raised from family members. Over the years, their Tastykakes – the now classic Krimpets, Kandy Kakes, and Juniors – have become iconic Philadelphia snack favorites. By 1922, the company had outgrown its home on Sedgley Avenue, and moved to Hunting Park Avenue, where it would remain for almost 90 years. By the 1980s, Tastykake was no longer just a Philly phenomenon. Improved distribution had made it possible to sell fresh, delicious cakes up to New England, down to Florida, and west to Ohio. Since its 2011 merger with Flowers Foods, the largest US-based producer of fresh packaged bakery foods, Tastykake has grown to encompass a whole line of sweet treats from snack cakes and pies to cookies and donuts available in supermarkets and other retail stores throughout the country.

When the company built a new state-of-the-art bakery in the Navy Yard in South Philadelphia in 2009, PIDC assisted with the expansion, providing funds for the purchase and installation of machinery and equipment. Tasty Baking started with an abandoned industrial site at the Navy Yard and reused the buildings as foundation material for the new bakery. The company chose gas as an energy source and installed a heat-recycling system that reduces the amount of energy needed for baking, making it more environmentally friendly.
