This summer, almost a dozen talented interns joined PIDC to learn and assist us in driving growth to every corner of Philadelphia. Get to know our interns and the PIDC departments they assist. Plus, see why they think Philadelphia is a great place to study, work, and play.

Most interesting thing learned while working at PIDC:
The New Market Tax Credits program is alive and kicking, and it’s not just something I learned abstractly in class.
Philadelphia is a great place to study, work, and play because:
Philadelphia has a home feel. Philly is one of the few cities in which the people who pass your favorite (or not so favorite) policies, work in the fields you’re studying on the daily, and opened your favorite play spots (recreation, dining, etc.) are highly accessible and interactive. This makes everyone (politicians, restaurateurs, and other changemakers in the city) seem like family, the good and bad parts of family, but family nonetheless!

Most interesting thing learned while working at PIDC:
A CDFI or business thrives off of efficient Interdepartmental communication. The fact that the very physical layout of PIDC offers each department the opportunity to walk up to members of another department with a quick question or a quick update is really effective. Interdepartmental projects become simpler, and the work flow becomes less complex.
Philadelphia is a great place to study, work, and play because:
It has the history of America embedded within it. Whether it be the Constitution Center, or the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia is home to the bedrocks on which America was founded. I am grateful to live here and have this great city as my background. We have some of the best educational institutions, whether it be Penn, Temple, Jefferson or Drexel. The diverse nature of our immigrant population, as well as the minority and marginalized communities, serve as the backbone of this city. As our Love Park states very clearly, “I Love Philly.”

Most interesting thing learned while working at PIDC:
The City of Philadelphia is in the top cities of the nation as one of the most prosperous cities, while at the same time, ranking at the top of the list for cities with high levels of poverty.
Philadelphia is a great place to study, work, and play because:
We have so much to offer. It’s hard to be bored or stay inactive. Philadelphia is really a big city with a small town feel, and we have what everybody is looking for. You just have to find it.

Most interesting thing learned while working at PIDC:
How PIDC’s mission-driven lending policies help drive investment and entrepreneurship into Philadelphia’s underserved communities.
Philadelphia is a great place to study, work, and play because:
It has a vibrant and diverse culture of education, arts, sports, and food! I’ve been lucky enough to witness the Eagle’s first Super Bowl win and add “jawn,” “hoagie,” “youse,” and “wooder” to my vocabulary.

Most interesting thing learned while working at PIDC:
PIDC has a major impact on the city of Philadelphia. I find it very interesting that PIDC not helps create job opportunities, but the company is also the reason for the majority of the growth in the city of Philadelphia.
Philadelphia is a great place to study, work, and play because:
You can meet many types of people. Philadelphia is very diverse in every aspect of the word. While working at PIDC, I have learned that no day will be exactly the same because of all that Philadelphia has to offer.

Most interesting thing learned while working at PIDC:
It’s been incredibly interesting, informative, and rewarding to experience the day-to-day dynamics of collaborating with other City agencies, community organizations, and elected officials. Having learned about citywide issues in class, I’m grateful for the opportunity, not only to learn firsthand how Philadelphia gets things done, but also to be part of moving it forward!
Philadelphia is a great place to study, work, and play because:
It’s a city on the rise, and there’s a palpable energy here. From restaurants sweeping the James Beard Foundation Awards, to the professional sports scene, to life science breakthroughs, people here are visibly and actively moving the needle. Philadelphians are down to earth and look out for each other. They’re fiercely loyal to defend their underdog city; Gritty couldn’t belong anywhere else. And of course, Philadelphia did so many things first. It’s where Nicolas Cage spends most of his time in “National Treasure.”

Philadelphia small businesses are flourishing in financial measures (revenues, profitability, hiring/retaining employees) that exceed the national averages from the 2017 Federal Reserve Small Business Credit Survey.

Most interesting thing learned while working at PIDC:
My time at PIDC has exposed me to the passion and thoughtfulness that is necessary for every part of our city to be enlivened to its greatest potential. The success of a unique city like Philadelphia requires the intense collaboration and partnerships of every stakeholder. The people I have met while at PIDC have shown me, by both word and action, how to make a meaningful impact on the city, so that it can continue to grow and thrive well into the future.
Philadelphia is a great place to study, work, and play because:
It’s a community that thrives on diversity. Spend one afternoon strolling down the city’s streets, and you can experience the birthplace of our nation, the fusion of countless cultures, and the heart of passionate Philadelphians. Whether I am in the mood for authentic cuisine, an invigorating sports game, or unique shopping, Philadelphia offers all that and more. Having easy access to all this city has to offer proves Philadelphia’s worth to be undeniably priceless.

Most interesting thing learned while working at PIDC:
Seeing technical knowledge and understanding merge into real-world operations, not just with electrical applications at the Navy Yard, but also those of all other facets of the business. It has given me a closer view at how each discipline works toward a common goal. It’s interesting to realize how differently the big picture can look from the vantage point of any one of its moving parts.
Philadelphia is a great place to study, work, and play because:
No matter who you are or where you find yourself, you’re connected to folks from all walks of life through music, food, and art. Diverse perspectives and experiences are celebrated because they are at the heart of innovation, and innovation drives the future. That’s what this city is all about — people moving toward a better future.

Philadelphia is a great place to study, work, and play because:
It’s the perfectly sized, perfectly vibrant city. It feels like there are just enough awesome neighborhoods and places to explore and stay engaged without feeling overwhelmed.
